HISTORICAL NAMES OF ODISHA 


The modern day Odisha was not known by the same name in it's history. It and it's parts are referred with different names .

1. Kalinga :  The name Kalinga was founded by son of King Bali by his name.

2. Utkala : The northern part of Kalinga nnamed as Utkala . Utkala was conquered by karna also. It is full of fine art.

3. Mahakantara : The name was founded during the Gupta period which means the 'great forest' . The name was so due the forest in Kalahandi and jeypur region.

4.Udra : The name Udra was due the tribes of people in the region. It was also a part of Udra kingdom.

5. Oddiyana : The name Odiyanna was mentioned by Buddhists .This may be happened due to the pronounce of odisha by the budhist scholars.

6. Kamala Mandala : The name Kamala Mandala was due to the lotus region in Kalahandi found in 1300a.c.

7. South kosala : The name was due to the presence of odisha region to the south of ancient Koshala kingdom. The south Koshala was also ruled by kusha one of the son of lord Rama.

8. Chedi : The name chedi was after the name of dynasty chedi ( one of the Mahajanapada)

9. Toshali : The name Toshali was after the name of River Mahanadi. The south and north part of the river are called as South Toshali and North Toshali .

10. Uranshin : The name was referred by the Arabian geologist in 10th century.
